Layoff Period Extended in British Columbia

More COVID-19 related changes are coming, this time to British Columbia.

Following suit with Alberta, the province of BC has recently made amendments extending their temporary layoff period from 13 weeks to 16 weeks in a 20-week period.

It’s important to note this change is only applicable if the layoff is due to COVID-19 related reasons.  The change is expected to be temporary, eventually reverting back to the 13-week period once the pandemic is over.

This change now aligns BC with the CERB, which provides for up to 16 weeks of income replacement benefits related to COVID-19.

Another change BC recently made was to their Labour Relations Regulations, extending the validity of union cards from 90 days to 6 months after they were signed during an organizing drive.
